Ilya, one of the Bulgarian student workers at Main Street Market this summer, walked from Sister Bay to Egg Harbor Wednesday afternoon – and evening! He went to the International meeting Tuesday night, but couldn’t find a ride back home – so he walked.
When he came to work Thursday noon, he told the story. I asked him if he tried to hitchhike; he said yes – to no avail. He walked from Sister Bay, south to County A, west on County E. He started at 3:30 and got home at 8:30pm – 5 hours! Ilya said County A and E were long, lonely stretches of road – and dark!
Steve was teasing him about his slow pace. Steve thought a man should be able to walk 5 miles/hour – at 20 miles that would be 4 hours. We were teasing Ilya about dogging it, but this morning he gave me some facts to dispute Steve’s claim. He walked 17.3 miles. The average man walks 3.1 miles/hour – Ilya clocked in a pace of 5.58 miles/hour. Absolutely not dogging it!
When Ilya showed me the picture of his attire, I told him he made a big mistake. If he would have had his Main Street Market shirt on – he would have gotten a ride – for sure! He agreed.
