Kevin, aka RenWei, Big Kevin, Deli Kevin, left Egg Harbor and the Main Street Market, two weeks ago. Before he returned to China he toured parts of the US. Many of the students who come to the Unites States on the work & travel program, really do travel! They go to New York, Chicago, Boston, Washington DC, Los Angeles, and always – to Las Vegas! Everyone everywhere in the world knows about Las Vegas – and they are all very curious to see it.
Kevin went to the Grand Canyon. Upon his return to China, he sent me this picture. This picture captures Ren Wei’s spirit perfectly! Some day, I am going to go to the Grand Canyon and copy his pose!
Kevin also told me hugged his mother when he saw her in China. At dinner before he left, he told me that it was not part of Chinese culture to hug your mother, never your father and he would NEVER kiss his mother. I asked him to please give his mother a big hug when he saw her, at his American boss’s request.
He did – and she loved it! Just one more thing Ren Wei learned at the Main Street Market this summer!
Most days, lunch break at the Main Street Market is taken outside at the picnic table. However, this was a rainy, cool day – and Nancy and Yang Bin had to improvise! I thought they looked so cute sitting on the water boxes in the backroom – and asked them to pose for me!
Ilya, one of the Bulgarian student workers at Main Street Market this summer, walked from Sister Bay to Egg Harbor Wednesday afternoon – and evening! He went to the International meeting Tuesday night, but couldn’t find a ride back home – so he walked.
When he came to work Thursday noon, he told the story. I asked him if he tried to hitchhike; he said yes – to no avail. He walked from Sister Bay, south to County A, west on County E. He started at 3:30 and got home at 8:30pm – 5 hours! Ilya said County A and E were long, lonely stretches of road – and dark!
Steve was teasing him about his slow pace. Steve thought a man should be able to walk 5 miles/hour – at 20 miles that would be 4 hours. We were teasing Ilya about dogging it, but this morning he gave me some facts to dispute Steve’s claim. He walked 17.3 miles. The average man walks 3.1 miles/hour – Ilya clocked in a pace of 5.58 miles/hour. Absolutely not dogging it!
When Ilya showed me the picture of his attire, I told him he made a big mistake. If he would have had his Main Street Market shirt on – he would have gotten a ride – for sure! He agreed.
It’s official – summer is over. Since it was such a beautiful day, Steve decided to walk the extra carts to the garage for winter storage today. He can hook 5 carts together and walk them down the street – it’s the easiest way! Last year, he waited until a cold day, but today was perfect.
Ilya also spent a couple of hours outside this afternoon cleaning the carts – and working on his tan! It looked like a cart wash on the dock side of the building. If I didn’t get so many phone calls, I would have loved to do that myself!
